Boeing taps debt market to raise $10 billion: Reuters
  + stars: | 2024-04-29 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The Boeing logo is displayed on a Boeing building on January 8, 2024 in El Segundo, California. Boeing on Monday tapped debt markets to raise $10 billion, after the U.S. planemaker burned $3.93 billion in free cash during the first quarter following slowing production of its best-selling jet, sources familiar with the matter said. Moody's said the rating reflects Boeing's still-strong business profile, which continues to mitigate ongoing weak performance in commercial aircraft, although headwinds surrounding the division could persist through 2026. Boeing will use the bond proceeds to increase its liquidity ahead of maturities on its existing debt load, including $4.3 billion in 2025, S&P wrote on Monday. The deal's bookrunners leading the bond sale include Bank of America , Citi, JPMorgan and Wells Fargo , according to the deal's term sheet.

Bridgit Mendler's path from Disney Channel star to space startup CEO started with — quite literally — an accident. The 31-year-old is the CEO and co-founder of Northwood Space, a company based in El Segundo, California that aims to mass-produce ground stations — otherwise known as the antennae that communicate with space satellites. "While everybody else was making their sourdough starters [during the Covid-19 pandemic], we were building antennas out of random crap we could find at Home Depot ... and receiving data from [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] satellites," Mendler told CNBC on Monday while announcing her startup. "I'm studying anthropology," Mendler told ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in 2015. While at Harvard, she served as co-president of the Harvard Space Law Society, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Bridgit Mendler is no stranger to reaching millions of people — now she wants to change how satellite data reaches the ground. "The vision is a data highway between Earth and space," Mendler told CNBC. "Space is getting easier along so many different dimensions but still the actual exercise of sending data to and from space is difficult. Rather than build rockets or satellites, Northwood aims to mass produce ground stations. Also known as teleports, ground stations are the typically large and often circular antennas that connect to satellites in space.

Activist investor Barington Capital is pushing Mattel to consider selling off its American Girl and Fisher-Price brands, citing underperformance within the divisions. Mattel shares were up around 3% in premarket trading Friday following a letter sent to Mattel Thursday, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. American Girl and Fisher-Price, two iconic brands, are among the most popular in their respective markets. Mitarotonda said that if Mattel cannot stymie continued erosion in both Fisher-Price and American Girl, which has suffered similar declines, the company "may not be the right owner of these brands." "We believe that these brands are now detracting from the success at Mattel's other segments and hurting shareholder value," Mitarotonda said in a release.

The Boeing Co. logo is displayed outside of company offices near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in El Segundo, California on January 18, 2024. Boeing confirmed late on Monday it is withdrawing a request it made to the Federal Aviation Administration last year seeking an exemption from a safety standard for its 737 Max 7 that is awaiting certification. Senator Tammy Duckworth, who chairs an aviation subcommittee, said last week she opposed Boeing's exemption request that would "prematurely allow the 737 Max 7 to enter commercial service." She noted the exemption Boeing had sought "involves an anti-ice system that can overheat and cause the engine nacelle to break apart and fall off. The FAA deferred comment to Boeing.

"Every time a prospective client calls me, it's one of the first things I talk about," Bailey told Business Insider. In her work as a realtor, Bailey said she typically sees property tax percentage rates in Texas sitting between 1.6% to 2.7%. Beyond Meat’s revenue fell nearly 9% in the third quarter as higher sales of its plant-based meat in Europe failed to make up for plummeting demand in the U.S. Beyond Meat cut its third-quarter and full-year revenue forecast last week, saying an anticipated rebound in plant-based meat sales during the quarter didn't occur. But in the U.S., he said, ads funded by the meat industry and others have led consumers to see plant-based meat as overly processed and unhealthy. The higher price of plant-based meat has also hurt U.S. sales at a time when consumers are stressed about inflation, he said. Frozen plant-based meat sales, including items like tenders and nuggets, were down 6%.

The plant-based meat company said Thursday that the reduction of about 65 employees is part of a broader corporate review. U.S. demand for plant-based meat has plummeted this year. Frozen plant-based meat sales, including items like tenders and nuggets, were down 6%. Plant-based meat is also fighting perceptions that it's overly processed and unhealthy, stoked in part by ads released by rival food companies. McDonald's has tested Beyond Meat's products in the U.S. but hasn't added them to its permanent menu.

Now may be the time to shop for an office lease. As office vacancies soar to record highs in some markets, office landlords often have no choice but to find new and creative ways to attract new clients. "When you have 55-year-old managing partners of a law firm looking for office space, and they see the golf simulator, they get pretty excited," he said. Long-term leases, which usually feature landlord-financed renovations to the office space, are now being offered with lease-termination options. Office landlords without access to this capital level are often left with only one lever: renting below market price.

Like many PeerStreet investors who spoke with Insider, Mincher has a strong résumé. Another form of crowdfunding, equity crowdfunding, works a bit like the stock market without the onerous and expensive process of initial public offerings. The PeerStreet investors who spoke with Insider said the outcome of this case could determine whether they stick with real-estate crowdfunding. Others, such as Fundrise, have moved away from crowdfunding in favor of a model for private real-estate investment trusts, similar to the BREIT later offered by Blackstone. Fritton, the former Patch of Land CEO, said Fundrise's fund model was the wave of the future for real-estate crowdfunding.

CNN —Your Chipotle guacamole may soon be prepared by a robot. Meet “Autocado,” a Chipotle robot designed to perform the more tedious tasks of creating the chain’s guacamole, including cutting, coring and peeling avocados. But Chipotle (CMG) said this “collaborative robot” will not eliminate jobs, but, instead, employees will work with the robot to speed up guacamole production. For its design, Chipotle partnered with Vebu Labs, a robotics startup in California, to analyze the preparation process at various Chipotle restaurants and identify the most time-consuming tasks for employees. And Chipotle is already testing “Chippy,” a robotic kitchen assistant that uses artificial intelligence to make tortilla chips to dip in Autocado’s guacamole.

The article, which was published this past week, documents the ways in which Barbie’s Dreamhouses reflect the social, cultural and economic evolution of modern American life. By 1974, when the Equal Credit Opportunity Act was passed, banning credit discrimination, Barbie’s Dreamhouse got a glamorous upgrade to three stories. Ms. Kodé wrote about this rich history, using Barbie’s Dreamhouses to mark different historical moments. But they also practiced moving and photographing Barbie using the stop-motion technique. Some Dreamhouses took over an hour to set up; the longest shoot required moving Barbie 137 times.

About 7.5 million Baby Shark bath toys are being recalled after reports that at least a dozen children were injured by them, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday. The top fins on the shark toys pose a risk of “impalement, lacerations and punctures,” the commission said. About nine of the 12 reported injuries required medical attention or stitches, according to the federal agency. The commission and Zuru urged customers to stop using the recalled toys. The toymaker said in a statement that it was working with retail partners to “remove and destroy” the products.

You’d have to look closely or you’d miss the homemade sign nailed to a telephone pole outside the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo, Calif. It’s right outside the entrance to the players’ parking lot, but many of them miss its blue-and-yellow words as they drive in. “I SEE GREATNESS IN YOU,” it says. But in a small yet meaningful way, the message has inspired Lakers Coach Darvin Ham as he leads the team in their Western Conference semifinal series against the Golden State Warriors. Ham has even forged an unlikely friendship with the man who posted the sign: Terrance Burney, a basketball-loving airline employee whose home is filled with inspirational signs.
“Now, we have a better understanding of the kind of benefits that operating in cislunar space can bring countries back home.”Though definitions sometimes differ, cislunar space generally refers to the space between Earth and the moon, including the moon's surface and orbit. In 2021, Holzinger co-authored a report titled “A Primer on Cislunar Space“ to help U.S. government officials understand the ins and outs of cislunar space. That interest is apparent: Last year, the Space Force identified cislunar operations as a development priority, and in April established the 19th Space Defense Squadron to oversee cislunar space. In November, the White House released its own strategy for interagency research on "responsible, peaceful, and sustainable exploration and utilization of cislunar space." Together, these factors could make it difficult to manage traffic in cislunar space, particularly if adversaries intentionally try to mask their activities there.

The Biden administration last week authorized Chevron to expand operations in Venezuela and resume taking prized heavy crude to the United States. Valero Energy Corp (VLO.N), PBF Energy (PBF.N) and Citgo Petroleum have shown interest in getting access to the oil Chevron is expecting in coming weeks, according to the people. No Venezuelan oil officially has been allocated to Chevron yet and no chartering contracts have been signed to transport cargoes to the United States, according to Venezuelan export schedules and Refinitiv freight data. Valero, PBF and other U.S. independent refiners would not need any new authorization to buy Venezuelan oil from Chevron. The primary effect will be to allow some Venezuelan oil to flow back to the United States, "which will help the U.S. refining system," Wirth said.
